Physics Lab


Newton won a stunning victory for the intellect and the democratization of science,
because it became possible for students to have as much authority as teachers. By
knowing proper methods, a youth could conduct an experiment whose results
might confound his elders.” Newton’s program of “experimental philosophy”
firmly and successfully established the central methods of physics, whereby
inference from experience guides formulation of hypotheses, whose predictions are
validated by experiment.
Laboratory activities in high school physics provide experience with phenomena, a
starting place for the systematic development of students’ ideas, and a testing
ground for the predictive power of their reasoning.
Laboratory activities are designed to engage students so that they may acquire skills to:
 measure physical quantities with appropriate accuracy
 recognize factors that could affect the reliability of their measurements
 manipulate materials, apparatus, tools, and measuring instruments
 clearly portray their descriptions of their observations and measurements
 represent information in appropriate verbal, pictorial, graphical, and mathematical
inference and reason their observations
 rationally defend their conclusions and predictions
 effective and valued participation with their peers and their teacher in a
cooperative intellectual enterprise

ranging from

 The Physics lab opens the door for entirely new exploration-based forms of
education. With this potential in mind, the lab provides an aid to teachers and
students wishing to try out virtual, “hands-on” experiences in physics.
Laboratory activities have long had a distinctive and central role in the science
curriculum. Science educators have suggested that many benefits accrue from
engaging students in science laboratory activities. Since the end of the 19th

century, when schools began to teach science systematically, the science laboratory
has become a distinctive feature of science education.
Practical work in Chemistry is used to engage students in investigations,
discoveries, inquiries, and problem-solving activities. The laboratory is designed to
help students gain a better idea of the nature of science and scientific investigation
by emphasizing the discovery approach. In addition, it gives students an
opportunity to observe chemical systems and to gather data useful for the
development of principles subsequently discussed in the textbooks and in class.

The Biology Lab is a resource place for biology and science teachers. It contains a
variety of lessons, quizzes, labs, web quests, and information on science topics.

the sidebar. Topics include: Ecology, Genetics, Anatomy, Cells, Scientific Method,
and Evolution.
The expression “hands-on, minds-on” summarizes the philosophy we have
incorporated in our biology lab activities so that students will learn best if they are
actively engaged and if their activities are closely linked to understanding
important biological concepts. For example, it is helpful to use hands-on models to
engage student interest and foster multiple modality learning, but it is crucial to
closely link the modeling activity to student understanding of the actual biological
processes and this can be done by regularly visits to the biology lab.
To make mathematics fun and interesting, the school has set up a special math lab
for students to learn about various concepts using tools, shapes and real-life
situations. It offers Multiple Teaching and Learning Aids as well as a complete
theme based ambience which helps students to visualize and feel mathematics.
Learning aids comprise of Technology Applications, Videos, Manipulative,
Measuring Instruments, Tables, Charts etc. A mathematics theme based ambience
is created complete with tables, chairs, posters, floor tiles etc. Based on the three
pillars of ‘Imagination, Investigation and Interaction’, it provides an opportunity to
students to understand, internalize, discover and verify the basic mathematical and
geometrical concepts through concrete objects and situations.

The laboratory also encourages the students to think, discuss amongst themselves
as well as with the teacher, and assimilate concepts.

The study of people, places, and environments enables us to understand the
relationship between human populations and the physical world.
Students learn where people and places are located and why they are there. They
examine the influence of physical systems, such as climate, weather and seasons,
and natural resources, such as land and water, on human populations. They study
the causes, patterns and effects of human settlement and migration, learn of the
roles of different kinds of population centers in a society, and investigate the
impact of human activities on the environment.
This enables them to acquire a useful basis of knowledge for informed decision-
making on issues arising from human-environmental relationships.
